[www.ekantipur.com] KATHMANDU, FEB 15 - While Kathmandu was cloaked in the light of youthful romance on Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, the city saw a good rise in the sale of condoms, apart from the increase in the sale of gift items. The Condom-house at Khichapokhari said the flow of customers, especially youngsters, on “lovers’ day” was very good. According to the shopkeeper, Yubraj Neupane, most of the customers on Tuesday “looked below 25.” “Youngsters thronging our store like this is encouraging for traders like us,” giggled Neupane, adding that the V-day’s scene on Tuesday also signified a “changing mindset” within the Nepali society. Marking the day, Condom-house had offered a lucrative scheme of distributing a packet of condom free of cost to those who came in couples. Altogether, 48 packets were distributed as gifts, Neupane said. According to him, what was interesting about the day’s business was the “unusual overflow” of youngsters. “In normal days, youngsters, presumably below 25, used to rarely visit the shop. However, the number escalated on Tuesday. Over 400 packets were sold to youngsters alone.” Similarly, Sweet Secret at Newroad, a store that specialises in sextoys, also sold around 50 toys on Monday and Tuesday. The store, according to Manager Prabin Dhakal, used to trade 10 toys a day at the most. Sweet Secret also sold 60 packets of condoms. “In a bid to attract customers on Valentine’s Day, we have been giving 15 percent discount in condoms and sextoys every year,” Dhakal said. “This time around, 15 percent of the customers were youngsters.” While the Valentine’s mood witnessed in these two shops shows an increasing number of youths indulging themselves in sexual relationships and love affairs, a recent study conducted by the Ministry of Health and Population among young people aged between 10 and 24 years lies in the same wave-length. According to the ministry’s Nepal Adolescent and Youth Survey 2010/11, around 30 percent lovers aged 20 to 24 in Nepal indulge in sexual relationships. The average age for the first love affair is 16 years for both boys and girls, the report said. Posted on: 2012-02-15 09:03 1 keer gewijzigd. Laatste wijziging: 15/02/2012 21:13 door Marthijn.
